WINTER ’09 COLLECTION

We launched our winter ’09 collection today! The stark photography was shot by Lexy at Jacob Riis Park in Rockaway, Queens. The collection was inspired by the apocalyptic and desolate mood of Chris Marker’s 1962 film La Jetée.

The campaign photo series includes images in empty parking lots and a secluded beach, reflecting vacant and cold spaces, much like the tone of Marker’s short film about the survivors of a destroyed city.

We want these images to give you the chill…so that you’ll bundle up! Don’t let winter sneak up on you before you get your must-haves!

T-SHIRT CULT: BIKE BUSTED AND MR. BLUE

Ah, what would Brooklyn be without stripped bikes – helplessly chained and left to the devices of heartless thieves looking to make it big in the burgeoning aftermarket bike parts business. We pay our respects to stripped bikes everywhere in our new t-shirt “Bike Busted.” The fallen friend depicted in this tee is one that many of us at the office walk by every day on our way to the G train’s Clinton-Washington stop at Lafayette St. Just a shell of the bike it once was, Mr. Blue lays outside, in rain, snow, sleet and dark of night, only with his trusty rusty chain beside him. Here’s to you, Mr. Blue.

LEXY HEADLINES INC. CONFERENCE PANEL

This morning, our fabulous CEO Lexy Funk spoke at the Inc. 500/5000 Conference in Washington, D.C, about the “The Art of Market Validation” alongside co-panelists Rob Adams, director of Moot Corp., Eric Ryan, co-founder of Method (the planet-friendly cleaning product company) and Mike Hoffman, Deputy Editor at Inc.com. The panel outlined actionable ways to develop and test new products and ideas with existing customers.

Lexy’s panel is one of several at this massive meeting of the entrepreneurial minds (1,700 entrepreneurs are in attendance!). So many successful entrepreneurs in one place must make for some amazing conversations. We are still waiting to hear Lexy’s report of how the event is going, but based on the Tweets out in Twitterland, it seems to be quite a time. Notable tweets include buzz about Zappos.com CEO Tony Hsieh’s keynote speech: “How a Positive Company Culture Begets an Enduring Brand.”

“Chase the vision, not the money. Who do you want to be in 10 years?” said Tony, according to Inc.’s Twitter feed. “Your core values aren’t important. It is your commitment to them.” We like the sound of that, Tony.

BKI BACK TO SCHOOL BAG DRIVE UPDATE

Thank you to everyone who helped make our first annual BKI Bag Drive a success! Due to the generosity of our customers, we collected more than 175 bags for homeless or poverty-stricken school-age children in New York, Portland and Chicago. Brooklyn Industries also donated some 200 backpacks to the cause. Donations in New York support Coalition for the Homeless’ Project Back To School supply drive; Chicago donations support Chicago Coalition for the Homeless; and Portland donations support Impact Northwest.

Coalition for the Homeless in NYC has already handed out many of the backpacks from our Bag Drive to NYC children on their first day of school. And we received a note from our Impact Northwest contact in Portland – she said the bags they receive from the drive will be used for a special program at the Vose Elementary School that allows low-income students to check out bags filled with food over the weekends to ensure that students have healthy food options to eat while not in school.

WINTER SNEAK PEEK: OUTERWEAR AND THE BEACH

Oh, the great irony of beaches and winter. Perhaps the most vivid image I have of beaches and winter is from the movie “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” where you see Clementine and Joel throwing snowballs at each other on a sandy beach in Long Island. The weather is cold, but the excitement never chills.

Speaking of beaches and winter, the latest photo shoot of our Winter 1 collection takes place on a beach. Last week, our models and CEO/resident photographer, Lexy Funk, took a ride over to Jacob Riis Park in the Rockaways. Here are a couple of sneak peek photos from the shoot and a little taste of what winter will be like on the beach.

Lucky Portlanders are rocking out this week at MusicFestNW, an annual music festival with bands such as Explosions in the Sky, Modest Mouse, Girl Talk, and Sunny Day Real Estate. One very special Portlander named Alexandra won the pass to enjoy this week of rock through our GO LOCAL! Giveaway series earlier this summer. We hope that you are having an awesome time, Alexandra! (If you’re reading this, we’d love to hear about your experience!)

You still have a chance to check out the action, the fest doesn’t end until Sunday. So be sure to go and enjoy the tail end of the amazing acts about to perform today, tomorrow, and Sunday!

PHOTOSHOOT PLANNING

Today, we’re getting ready for our winter photo shoot. We’re getting used to the idea of hot chocolate and long sleeves, and welcoming the gradual drop in temperature here in New York City. With irony in mind, we’re renting two vans for tomorrow’s shoot and driving out to Jacob Riis Beach in the Rockaways to photograph our collection against the backdrop of ocean and hopefully clear skies. Here’s a glimpse at our stylist Eugene helping us prep!

FNO SUCCESS AT WEST VILLAGE

We were thrilled to have A Million Years play a 30-minute acoustic set for us on September 10th at our West Village location. They played all new tunes for our guests and impressed everyone in attendance with their charm, good looks and talent. They’re playing at at the Highline Ballroom next on September 18th. You can still grab tickets if you hurry!
